Lokman Tsui: Trauma and totalitarianism
 – Hong Kong



Lokman Tsui is a writer, recovering academic, and amateur activist. Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, he received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States and, upon graduation, went to Hong Kong, where his parents originally are from, to work as a university professor. He participated in the Umbrella Movement of 2014 and the Anti-Extradition Bill protests in 2019, and left Hong Kong in 2021. He is currently a research fellow at the University of Toronto, where he researches digital authoritarianism and transnational repression. He is based in Amsterdam, where he is writing a book, a personal history of home, trauma, and authoritarianism.
