Tomáš Gabriel: We have no better editor

Born in 1983 in Kuchař near Beroun. A graduate of the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University. He is a poet, prose writer, journalist, translator, and editor, and works as a software analyst. He made his debut in 2012 with the collection Tak černý kůň tak pozdě v noci (Such a Black Horse So Late at Night), followed by six further books, most recently Venkovní stání (Outdoor Parking, 2025). “Very prompt and delicate notes about how the main character feels inside,” wrote Petr Borkovec, moved by the book. “Moreover, the execution is hard to rival. Tomáš Gabriel focuses on syllables and pauses and cuts. In contemporary poetry, I think we have no better editor. He understands even the slightest resonance of speech […] and knows how to follow it. Language has a will of its own, so the poet should be humble—the author adheres to this.”
