Minik Hansen: Playful and dreamlike Greenlandic reggae

Minik Hansen (1984, Nuuk) is a Greenlandic poet and lyricist and one of the distinctive representatives of contemporary spoken and musical poetry. A self-taught artist, his relationship to poetry began in childhood, when he first attempted to translate poems into Greenlandic. He gained wider recognition primarily as a lyricist for the successful Greenlandic reggae band Sauwestari, for whom he has written most of the songs. Alongside his musical work, he develops his own poetry, which so far circulates mainly through live performances and author readings. He writes primarily in Greenlandic, but also translates his texts into Danish and English, striving to preserve their rhythm and rhyme so they remain accessible across cultures. His poetry addresses everyday life in Greenland, social transformations, traditions, and personal experience from childhood to adulthood; nature and its connection to human emotions also play a significant role. Hansen’s style is marked by playfulness, linguistic inventiveness, and a sense of humour, while at the same time opening up serious social and existential themes. In 2014, he won the Poetry Slam competition at the Katuaq cultural centre in Nuuk and has performed regularly at literary and cultural events ever since. Alongside his artistic work, he is also active as an environmental consultant at Royal Greenland.
