Jessie Kleemann: Pale snow bleeds on a blue little planet

Jessie Kleemann (1959, Upernavik) is a Greenlandic poet, performer, and visual artist based in Copenhagen. She is among the most prominent figures of the contemporary Arctic cultural scene. In her work, she combines poetry, performance, video, and visual art, drawing on Inuit traditions, myths, and rituals, which she transforms into experimental forms. In literature, she gained attention with the collection Taallat – Digte – Poems (Poems, 1997) and especially with the book Arkhticós Dolorôs (Arctic Pain, 2021), nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. Her work is characterised by strong imagery, physical expressiveness, and a focus on themes of identity, corporeality, colonialism, and the relationship between humans and nature. Her visual work is represented in numerous museums. In her performances she collaborates with artists across genres, for example with the musician Søren Gemmer.
